Blog — How the work is split
An AI workflow and an agent do different jobs.
A workflow is a path you can audit. An agent is given a goal and a boundary, and it chooses the next action. A client gains speed when each is used for the work it fits.

A workflow is the path.
An AI workflow is a sequence decided before the run starts. A document arrives. A model extracts the fields. A rule checks them. A person sees the exception. The record is written. The model works inside a step. The next step starts when the last one finishes.
That shape fits work the business already understands: invoice intake, a release check, a test pass against a known suite, a reply that has to follow a policy. When something fails, the team can point at the step.
An agent chooses the next action.
An agent is given a goal, a boundary, and tools. It decides what to do next. It might read the source, draft a change, then check the result against the rule. It can repeat a step. It stops when the goal is met, or when it reaches the boundary. A person still accepts the outcome.
The boundary is what makes the agent useful. An agent that can do anything is a larger model with a new name. A useful one acts only inside the job it was given, and it stops.
Each one fails in a different place.
A workflow can hand one step to an agent when that step needs a decision inside a limit. An agent can run inside a workflow. Swapping them is where the cost shows up. A fixed path on an open problem stalls at the first exception. An agent on a fixed process takes longer, and is harder to explain when someone asks which step ran.
What a client gains.
Known work gets faster
The path stays the one the business already runs. The slow steps get help. The record of each step stays.
Open work gets a goal
An agent works toward the outcome and chooses the next action inside a boundary. A person still accepts the result.
Failure stays local
A workflow shows the step. An agent shows the action it took. The outcome is not buried in one long reply.
The brief names the shape
Engineering delivery uses workflows for the repeatable path and agents for the steps that need a decision. A business system uses a workflow for the process and an agent for the assistant that has to look something up before it acts.
Perfectz Digital commissions both as outcomes. AI used to engineer better software, and AI engineered into the business. The choice between a workflow and an agent belongs in the brief.
